Sunday, 19th April : The Changing Face of Main Street
This tour will introduce you to early Gippsland businesses, services and every day life through time. Your tour guide will show you how townspeople accessed services in the late 1800s, houses and farm equipment ordered via catalogues, boots made from scratch to sending a telegram. Follow the shift in communication, health care, law and fashion and find out what stayed the same and what moved on. Our 8 acres of parkland welcomes you to explore the rest of our history after your tour, we have a cafe on-site and the park is open until 4pm. Sunday, 3rd May : Forge by Hand - Trades, Tools & Transformation
This tour will be hosted by our resident blacksmith, tour through our many trade specific buildings and see how skilled trades supported daily life in the 1850s to 1930s. Discussion on what changed for tinsmiths, wheelwrights and blacksmiths as cars, machines in general, mass production and new materials arrived, see original printing presses used in the Gippsland area way before the digital age. What trades survived, adapted or disappeared. When the tour is completed, you are welcome to explore the rest of our buildings at your leisure. The park and cafe close at 4pm. |

Thursday, 30th April : Hooves to Horsepower - A change in Transport, Defence & Knowledge
Your specialised tour guide will take you through Gippsland's ANZAC exhibition showing the military service and its impact on everyday life, including Australia's first sea battle in WWI that gained us the steam whistle from the famous battle between the German steam ship SMS Emden when it was sunk by the HMAS Sydney. Your curiosity in the evolution of horse-drawn transport will be sated by the tour of our extensive horse drawn vehicle collection held here at Old Gippstown Heritage Park, which is one of the largest in Victoria. Finally, the Narracan Mechanics' Institute Library is a symbol of changing access to education and ideas. This collection is one of the last existing, unadulterated Mechanic's Institute libraries in the country. This part of the tour will provide insight into the type of practical reading our pioneers were indulging in during the early days of Gippsland and how our returned soldiers turned farmers learned from books what they needed to know to prosper in a new world. When the tour is completed, you are welcome to explore the rest of our buildings at your leisure. The park and cafe close at 4pm. |
